What do you do with your old socks? Too old that they are no longer presentable, either white is no longer white or the garter that makes the sock hold on to your skin no longer does. Sometimes, you cannot find the other, leaving you an unpaired, lonely sock. The problem is, there is not just one but many, especially if there are several members of the family living in the same house, especially kids.
The following are some ideas you can do:
- sew the toes together and you get an alternative mop material
- make a puppet out of it
- if there’s enough, put them all in an old t-shirt (cut the shirt first to take away the arms up then sew one side to close) then sew the other end to seal and you get a throw pillow
- make them into balls and you have a soft ball to play catch or shoot a basket
What else can you think of? Your suggestions are more than welcome.

That’s a good idea, Charlotte, thanks!
The dust actually gets into the mesh of the sock and not merely moves the dust from one side to another, like a feather duster.

We fill odd/old socks with uncooked rice. I put some in the freezer to use cold packs and keep some out to microwave and use as hot packs. These also make great “bean” bags.
Cutting off the toe and using just the cuff, I have used socks as cup cozies. Great for mugs of hot stuff and tall glasses on the patio.

Hi Kendra…really!? Now that you mentioned it (cold packs and hot packs) I see the bright idea. I just don’t have the means to try it since I don’t have a freezer/ref nor microwave. The leg part of the sock, you mean, cutting off the whole foot? It would be funny to have the heel part heeling towards your direction while you drink from the hot glass if it’s just the toe cut off.
Great ideas, really!!!
Thanks for contributing!

I have a pair of boots that have speed laces (with metal tabs to wrap the laces )
my pants catch on the metal tabs.
I cut the cuff portions off longer topped socks and use them to cover the top part of my boots like a leg warmer- so my pants dont catch on them.

I use socks as heat packs too! They work great for ear aches.
